The year 2023 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of a strategic partnership between China and Brazil, and the next year will also see the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, laying a foundation for exploring new channels of bilateral cooperation, and comprehensively launching a new round of cooperation in scientific and technological innovation. The Federative Republic of Brazil has been officially invited as the Country of Honor of this year's Pujiang Innovation Forum.

Scientific and technological cooperation is an anchor for stable relations between China and Brazil

China and Brazil established diplomatic relations in August 1974. China and Brazil signed a pioneering Agreement on Bilateral Cooperation in Science and Technology in 1982.Since then, the two countries have launched a number of projects and programs, and constantly made achievements.

·The China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite Program is a scientific and technological cooperation program for developing and operating earth exploration satellites. The first satellite in this series was successfully launched in 1999.A protocol for the joint development of the sixth satellite has also been signed.

·The BINGO radio telescope, currently under construction in Brazil, can be used to study dark matter.

· China-Brazil Nanotechnology Research and Innovation Center, a network of cooperation between Brazilian and Chinese universities and research institutions, has completed 10 projects in the fields of environment, renewable energy, and biopharmaceuticals, etc.

· China-Brazil Center for Epidemiological Research and Prevention has been playing a key role in cooperation between the two countries in genetic sequencing of COVID-19.


· China-Brazil Center for Climate Change and Energy Technology Innovation conducts research and development in key “net-zero carbon” projects such as wind energy, biofuels, carbon capture, and carbon sequestration, and in deep-sea oil exploration technology.

· The Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences collaborates with Brazil's National Center for Energy and Materials Research.

The strategic role of technological innovation in the economic development and economic competitiveness of the two countries

At the invitation of the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, paid a State Visit to China between 12 and 15 April 2023.

In the Joint Communiqué between the Federative Republic of Brazil and the People’s Republic of China on the Deepening of their Global Strategic Partnership, Both sides recognized the strategic role of scientific and technological innovation in the economic development and economic competitiveness of the two countries. Both sides pointed out that bilateral cooperation is a key means to achieve the goals. In view of this, both sides decided to cooperate closely in the fields of E-commerce, low-carbon economy, digital economy, and information and communication technology, etc. Both sides agreed to encourage interaction between the two countries' entrepreneurial ecosystems, establish joint research, development and innovation centers, and cooperate to carry out related projects.

China and Brazil have extensive and diversified cooperation in the field of science and technology

While attending the press conference of the 2023 Pujiang Innovation Forum, da Costa, minister-counselor of the Brazilian Embassy in China, said, “Looking forward to the future, the challenge we face is to enhance partnership between the two countries in the field of scientific and technological innovation, from scattered successful cases in the past and present to a more organic model of continuous cooperation, for the purpose of increasing the intensity of cooperation”.

In the background of continual and deepening cooperation in the field of scientific and technological innovation between Brazil and China, a delegation from Brazil, the Country of Honor for this forum, which will be composed of expert representatives from the Brazilian government, enterprises, academia and research institutions, will visit Shanghai. During the Forum, the events related to the 4th China-Brazil Innovation Week, such as the 1st China-Brazil Nanotechnology Seminar, will be held to jointly explore new paths of industry, university and research cooperation between the two sides. Additionally, Brazil's latest scientific and technological achievements and technology needs will be displayed in the National Pavilion of the InnoMatch EXPO.
