[HOT] Press Conference of 2021 Pujiang Innovation Forum Is Held in Beijing
On the afternoon of May 20, 2021, the Press Conference of 2021 Pujiang Innovation Forum was held by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Secretariat of Pujiang Innovation Forum in Beijing. XIE Min, Director-General of Department of Policy, Regulation and Innovation System, Ministry of Science and Technology, CHEN Hongkai, Second-level Inspector of Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, Saleh Altheeb Alhemeiri, Head of Economic and Trade of Embassy of the UNITED ARAB EMIRATES and CHEN Jun, Deputy Director-general of Chongqing Science and Technology Bureau attended the conference, introduced the main contents and preparations of 2021 Pujiang Innovation Forum, as well as the highlights of the relevant activities organized by the Country of Honor and the Province of Honor, and answered the questions from reporters. The conference was chaired by LV Jing, Deputy Director and News Spokesman of the General Office of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Under the theme of “Innovation, For a Better Life of Mankind, 2021 Pujiang Innovation Forum is scheduled to be held in Shanghai from May 31 to June 4 to discuss how science and technology can better serve human life, and how to jointly promote innovation towards a more open, inclusive, balanced, and win-win direction to let all people in the world share the fruits of global innovation and economic growth.
With the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the Country of Honor and Chongqing as the Province (Municipality) of Honor, the Forum mainly consists of 1 main forum, namely the opening ceremony and the plenary session, the “INNO-MATCH EXPO”, and over ten sub-forums, cooperation sub-forums and the Result Release Conference around topics including regional innovation, innovation policies, innovation and entrepreneurship, young talents, future science (brain science and climate change) and emerging technologies (blockchain, vaccines and global health, fintech, and scientific data).

2021 Forum underlines the following 4 features:
Deeper International S&T Cooperation and Exchanges
Firstly, the S&T cooperation and exchanges with the UAE, the Country of Honor, is to be intensified. Experts of China and the UAE will have a collision of ideas at the Forum, and the UAE will also set a national pavilion at the INNO-MATCH EXPO.
Secondly, a complex of Europe pavilions (consisting of the Switzerland pavilion, the Britain pavilion, the Belgium pavilion, the France pavilion, the Netherlands pavilion, the Northern Europe pavilion, and the Germany pavilion), the Japan pavilion, the Korea pavilion and the pavilions of other countries will be set at the INNO-MATCH EXPO, and the World Tech-transfer Manager Summit will also be held in the same period to facilitate technology transaction at home and abroad.
Thirdly, at the opening ceremony, Bernard L. Feringa, Winner of 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Academician of Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Foreign Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Luc Van den hove, President and CEO of IMEC, Steven Inchcoombe, Chief Publishing Officer and Member of the Board of Directors of Springer Nature, Richard Horton, Editor-in-chief of The Lancet, Vas Narasimhan, CEO of Novartis, and other senior politicians, leaders of international organizations and scientific research institutions, top scientists, and leaders of academic journals from all over the world will address the Forum on cloud.
More Attention to the Development of Young Scientists
Firstly, the YES SUMMIT will be organized with the help of Tencent Explorer Prize and other partners to invite young scientists within and outside China to have in-depth interactive communication around “The Future Features of Science Community: Diversity, Connection and Sharing”.
Secondly, the Forum has initiated an event themed “Seeking the Voice of Youth” in March to solicit the views, values and visions of youth on science and technology innovation around the annual topics and different thematic directions of the Forum.
Further Increased Professionalization of the Forum
Together with well-known institutions in different fields, the plenary session and the sub-forums will focus on major issues such as the digital transformation of cities, cutting-edge technologies in the world, people’s life and health, and talent development and agglomeration, under the theme of “Innovation, For a Better Life of Mankind”.
Firstly, at the plenary session, heavyweights including Michael Levitt, Winner of 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and Professor of Structural Biology at Stanford University, CHEN Wei, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Director of the Institute of Bioengineering, Academy of Military Medical Sciences, PLA Academy of Military Science, Mu-ming Poo, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Academic Director of Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Top Leader of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. will be invited to share their views.
Secondly, in terms of sub-forums, centering on actively supporting the digital transformation of cities, the Foresight Forum on Blockchain Development and Construction of Digital China, the Emerging Technology Forum themed the “Scientific Data Innovation Conference themed ‘Data as the Essence of All Things’”, and the Science & Technology Finance Forum themed “The Financial Reform in the Digital Era” are to be held.
Centering on actively exploring cutting-edge technologies in the world, the Future Science Forum themed “Neurocognitive Mechanism”, and the Future Science Forum themed “Threats of Climate Change and One Health” are to be held.
Centering on vigorously protecting people’s life and health, the Global Health and Development Summit is to be held.
Centering on positively facilitating talent development and agglomeration, the World Tech-transfer Manager Summit, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum themed “Starting with Technology and Innovation: Shaping the Future of Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation in China”, and the National High-end Forum on Science and Technology Innovation and Achievement Commercialization in Universities are to be held.
In addition, to actively expand the global innovation network, the Forum will continue to hold the “Belt and Road” Seminar focusing on the “‘Belt and Road’ Innovation Journey for Health, Digitalization and Greenness”, the Policy Forum focusing on “Eliminating Faults: Policy Options for Sustainable Innovation”, and the Regional & Urban Forum focusing on “Collaborative Agglomeration: New Cities and New Space”.
Further Expanded Output Spillover of the Forum
Firstly, the “INNO-MATCH EXPO” driven by innovation needs will be properly organized to comprehensively strengthen the technology transfer and commercialization service attribute as well as the technology transaction attribute of the expo, and nearly 10,000 national technological needs to be addressed are to be demonstrated in partner with China Innovation Challenge, to look for “respondents” at a global level.
Secondly, a special result release conference is to be held in partnership with Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development, Nature, Shanghai Institute for Science of Science, and other relevant think tanks and authorities to release a series of heavy research results, index reports, etc., including National Innovation Index Report 2020, which opens a window for the society to recognize and evaluate the innovation-driven development of China, the Evaluation Report of National High-Tech Zone Innovation Capability (2020), the Annual Report on the Eco-system of Science and Technology Finance in Shanghai, 2021 Ideal City-Global Survey of Young Scientists, and other outcome reports.
Thirdly, the ideas of the experts engaging in the Forum are to be summarized in a collection of thematic research reports in partnership with S&T think tanks; mainstream media, new media (platforms), and other partners will be invited to deeply dig innovative ideas to realize all-round and full-matrix network coverage and build a multidimensional and multi-form communication ecosystem, so as to create a great atmosphere of innovation.
